Original article: Corte de Apelaciones declara admisible recurso presentado por Gustavo Gatica para anular juicio que liberó a excarabinero Claudio Crespo
Deputy Gustavo Gatica (Ind) hailed a «good news» as the Santiago Appeals Court admitted the nullification request to overturn the verdict that freed ex-Carabinero Claudio Crespo, who has been identified as the person responsible for the shot that struck the current legislator during the 2019 unrest.
In a video shared on his social media, Gustavo Gatica stated, «For now, we only know that it was accepted; in a couple of months, we will see the substance of the matter.»
«This is a positive development because the summer verdict in our first trial revealed a contradiction that is difficult to understand. On one hand, it was established that Claudio Crespo was the one who shot me, which is interesting since he repeatedly stated during the trial that he wasn’t; yet on the other hand, that same court did not convict him for this act,» Gatica remarked.
The lawmaker added, «We will continue to insist on the pursuit of justice. This is a small step in that pursuit; I have always said from the beginning that this is not just about me and, in fact, it is not about the past, but rather about the future of the institutions we want to build and, above all, about how we protect our democracy.»
We will continue to provide updates.
