The Complex Cases Unit of the Atacama Public Prosecutor’s Office has formally charged two former Carabineros officers who were investigated for irregular activities that deviated from their police duties. This led to an investigation by the police force itself, which actively collaborated in the case.
As reported by prosecutor Luis Miranda Flores, the investigation was declared confidential only regarding the details of the events under investigation. However, it can be shared that the actions being scrutinized involve the defendants soliciting payments from individuals for escorting oversized cargo trucks traveling along Route 5 Norte.
«The prosecution formalized the investigation concerning three incidents that occurred in July and August of last year. In addition to conducting escort duties without the proper channels, in one instance, a government vehicle not authorized for such activities was used,» the prosecutor detailed.
The prosecutor added that the acts being investigated indicate that the arrested individuals «violated their official duties by undertaking tasks they were not assigned, as well as soliciting fees for them.»
With this evidence, the Public Prosecutor’s Office carried out the necessary investigation, which was presented to the Copiapó Guarantee Court.
At this judicial stage, considering the seriousness of the facts and to ensure the success of the ongoing proceedings, the prosecution requested and obtained the precautionary measure of pre-trial detention for both defendants, setting the investigation period at 120 days.
