The latest Threat Landscape Report by Fortinet, through FortiGuard Labs, has revealed a troubling increase in cybercrime fueled by Artificial Intelligence, along with a staggering 389% rise in ransomware victims. Ransomware is a type of malicious software that locks or encrypts a victim’s data or devices, demanding a ransom payment to restore access.

According to Fortinet, their report «provides an insight into the current threat landscape and trends for 2025, including a comprehensive analysis of the tactics employed in cyberattacks, guided by the MITRE ATT&CK framework.»

Initially, the findings indicated that cybercrime «is no longer functioning merely as a series of isolated campaigns; it operates as a system with malicious hackers engaging in a lifecycle from one end of the threat spectrum to the other.»

The report also disclosed the number of cyberattack attempts recorded in Latin America, which reached 843.3 billion in 2025, with Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia being the most affected countries.

In Chile, 8.8 billion cyberattack attempts were logged, including 5 billion active scans. This stands in stark contrast to the 27.6 billion attempts recorded in 2024.

As for ransomware impacts, there were 7,831 confirmed victims globally, a figure that dramatically exceeds the 1,600 identified in last year’s report.

«The availability of cybercrime kits such as WormGPT, FraudGPT, and brute-force AI has contributed to this 389% year-over-year increase. The most targeted sectors included manufacturing (1,284 cases), financial services (824), and retail (682). The geographical concentration highlights the USA (3,381), Canada (374), and Germany (291),» the report elaborates.
