Original article: 24 Premios Nobel denuncian colapso del sistema científico argentino y exigen a Milei detener su desmantelamiento
In a direct appeal to Argentina’s President, Javier Milei, 24 Nobel Prize winners, alongside dozens of prominent international scientists, have called for an end to the dismantling of the nation’s scientific infrastructure.
As reported by international media, this call was made public through a letter initiated by molecular biologist Alberto Kornblihtt and national congresswoman and physicist Adriana Serquis.
The document, which continued to gather support at the time of this report, highlights a deteriorating national system of science and technology. It urges Milei’s administration to reverse all measures that jeopardize the institutions and scientific capacities built over decades.
Argentine media outlet El Destape noted that «one of the most noteworthy aspects of this statement is that it has already gathered signatures from 24 Nobel laureates, as well as internationally recognized scientists. Among them is Paul Nurse, a Nobel Prize winner in Medicine and current president of the Royal Society of London, one of the world’s most prestigious scientific institutions.»
In addition to Nurse, the letter was supported by fellow Nobel laureates: Phillip A. Sharp, Richard Roberts, H. Robert Horvitz, Andrew Fire, Victor Ambros, Steven Chu, Barry Marshall, Craig Mello, May-Britt Moser, Ferenc Krausz, Roger Kornberg, Michael Rosbash, Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, and Aaron Ciechanover, among other distinguished scientists.
All signatories attributed the deterioration to budget cuts in the sector and a lack of guarantees regarding its sustainability, criticizing that policies implemented since Milei’s administration began have resulted in the loss of approximately eight jobs daily in the fields of science and technology.
Additionally, the signatories expressed their «dismay» at what they characterized as the militarization of scientific organizations, even stating that recent interventions in public institutions evoke memories of a new «Night of the Long Sticks.»
They also condemned the layoffs and operations conducted at CNEA, INTI, and Conicet.
We will continue to provide updates.
