With 77 votes in favor, 68 against, and 1 abstention, the Chamber of Deputies approved the admissibility of the constitutional accusation presented by right-wing legislators against former Minister of Finance, Nicolás Grau.
During the session, it was also decided that Deputies Pier Karlezi, Benjamín Moreno, and Paulina Muñoz will formalize the charge before the Senate.
After the vote, the former minister of President Boric made statements to the press in Congress, asserting that «I have not committed any illegal acts, and therefore the accusation lacks merit.»
«We will go to the Senate with the same calmness and humility that we have maintained here. I take this very seriously; those who voted in favor of this step today, as well as those who voted against it, are representatives of the citizens, and I have great respect for democratic institutions,» Grau commented.
The former finance minister reiterated that «what we will do now with my team next week is go to the Senate to present ourselves humbly, but with much conviction that we are right, that I have not committed any illegal acts, and therefore the accusation lacks merit.»
Finally, Grau emphasized that he has felt «very supported by the entire progressive spectrum,» which he believes demonstrates the certainty within his sector that the accusation «lacks legal foundations.»
Meanwhile, various media reported that during the Chamber’s vote, RN deputies Diego Schalper, Ximena Ossandón, Luis Pardo, and Jorge Guzmán (Evópoli) refrained from supporting the accusation against Grau, while Joanna Pérez (ex-Democrats) abstained.
From the opposition, Deputy Juan Santana (PS) recalled that «the heart of the accusation against Grau was an inconsistency pointed out by Quiroz. Today the Independent Fiscal Council stated that it does not exist: the finance minister mounted an accusation based on data that the independent technical body disproved. And who voted to approve it anyway? The PDG.»
«They lowered taxes for large companies, authorized more debt, abstained from relief for CAE, and today they accused Grau. They say they are not in the government, but the votes say otherwise,» questioned the socialist legislator.
We will continue to inform.
