In response to the rise of far-right forces and weakened democracies, the international progressivism has developed a ten-point framework aimed at creating a common agenda to address current challenges related to strengthening democracy, social justice, human rights defense, economic development centered on citizen well-being, and promoting multilateralism, among other priorities.

The «Ten Principles for a Global Progressive Agenda» was published during the inaugural edition of the Global Progressive Mobilisation (GPM), a discussion forum that began this Friday in Barcelona and will conclude on Saturday with a plenary session.

This event, attended by representatives from 100 political parties across five continents, is organized by the Socialist International, the Socialist Party of Europe, and the Progressive Alliance. It features 160 presentations aimed at transitioning from diagnosis to action, with the goal of “turning conviction into results”.

The forum will include participation from key figures in international progressivism, such as the host and Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, along with leaders from Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva; Colombia, Gustavo Petro; Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum; Uruguay, Yamandú Orsi; and South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, among others, including academics and labor leaders.

Former Chilean President Gabriel Boric is also expected to attend.

Ten Principles for Reinforcing Global Progressivism

The Spanish version of the «Ten Principles for a Global Progressive Agenda» was published in the print edition of l’Endavant! and includes a series of proposals aimed at rearming and strengthening progressivism in the face of far-right advances and the crisis of multilateralism.

This framework is introduced as a strategy to provide a coordinated response to issues that must be defended against the authoritarianism and warfare propagated by governments like that of former U.S. President Donald Trump.

Renewing Democracy and Social Justice

«Democracy must be defended daily or it is lost forever,” asserts the ten principles, highlighting the need to confront any authoritarian drift.

Moreover, it emphasizes that democracy must be continuously renewed to become increasingly participatory and accessible to citizens, as well as «more resistant to capture by oligarchic interests,» given that when democratic institutions are not safeguarded, they erode over time.

Furthermore, the core goal must be to promote social justice to ensure that «no one is left behind, without exception.»

According to the ten principles, «ensuring universal social rights — including health, education, housing, and dignified pensions — bolsters both social cohesion and democratic stability.»

Sustainable Economy Focused on Social Development

The document asserts that «the economy must serve the people, not the other way around«; thus, its growth should not be evaluated solely by Gross Domestic Product (GDP), but also by the real well-being of citizens.

Considering that «wealth that is not distributed becomes unequal power«, it advocates for models that aim to reduce disparities, open opportunities, and ensure dignified work and fair wages, thereby imposing limits on the «unregulated power of financial markets.»

At the same time, a deep transition towards sustainable economies is crucial for addressing the threats posed by the climate crisis.

However, this process must unfold in a socially just context, as responsibility «cannot fall on those who have contributed the least to the problem.»

«Ecology and social justice are not contradictory objectives; they are complementary. The future will either be green and just, or it will not be,» the proposal reads.

Defense of Human Rights and Feminism

Under the premise that the «universality of rights is non-negotiable«, the ten principles emphasize that their protection must be provided «without exceptions or double standards,» especially in the context of scenarios involving «armed conflict, forced displacement, or political persecution.»

Additionally, it warns that «without real equality between women and men, without feminism, democracy remains incomplete

Universal Access to Technology, Digital Sovereignty, and Media Literacy

In a global context where the technological and digital revolution creates both opportunities and fosters forms of inequality, control, and power concentration, the progressive agenda must ensure universal access to technology as a basic right; regulate its development democratically — especially regarding platforms and algorithms that shape public space and the job market — and safeguard the digital sovereignty of states and citizens against oligopolistic concentration.

Under this premise, «technology must expand freedoms, not concentrate power«.

Furthermore, the ten principles propose robust critical media literacy, the sole means of building citizens capable of deliberating and critically analyzing media content, identifying propaganda, assessing sources, and avoiding becoming victims of algorithmic manipulation.

Recognizing that a «well-informed and critical citizenry is the best antidote to authoritarianism«, progressive forces should promote critical media literacy «from schools to public spaces», deeming it as urgent as the regulation of platforms and the defense of independent media.

Progressive Unity and Global Responses

Based on the premise that «while plurality adds to strength, fragmentation detracts», the ten principles propose that the cooperation among left and center-left democratic forces is vital to confront an extreme right that «acts in a coordinated manner on a global scale.»

The ideological, cultural, and territorial plurality should be viewed as a strength, as what can weaken progressivism is «not internal debate, but sterile division.»

«Alone we are vulnerable. Together we are stronger,” the text states.

In this context, promoting renewed cooperation and multilateralism is key to responding to global challenges (climate, migration, health, technology), while strengthening international institutions ensures they become more democratic and representative.

«Progress only advances if we walk together,” the ten principles conclude.
