Artistic Resistance in Theater: ‘Scenes of Population in Resistance’ Returns to Santiago’s Stage

The theatrical conference Scenes of Population in Resistance, produced by the Critical Scene and Memory Platform and directed by Patricia Artés, will be featured at the Camilo Henríquez Theater in Santiago. This presentation is part of the Memory Cycle taking place throughout September to commemorate the anniversary of the Coup d’État.

Performances are scheduled for September 3, 4, and 5.

The production offers an insight into an often-overlooked chapter of Chilean theater history: the performance practices established in marginalized urban areas during the civic-military dictatorship.

Rather than reconstruct a complete history, the artwork engages with fragments of those experiences through a weave of archives, documents, testimonies, images, sound recordings, fictions, and imaginaries that transition from research and historical archives into the performance and action on stage.

In this way, the staging seeks to reclaim a forgotten part of Chile’s popular theatrical history, highlighting the vibrant scene that emerged beyond traditional theater venues, forged amidst pots and barricades, intertwined with daily life, and contributing to survival against death and misery.

Patricia Artés, the show’s director, stated that the proposal «approaches and seeks to acknowledge a fragment of popular resistances and theatrical expressions that are generally under-studied by both theater and social sciences.»

Artés detailed that for the archival and documentation process of these little-known theatrical events, the creative team collaborated with members of the Society and Differentiated Studies Magazine (SED), composed of History students from the University of Santiago.
