Original article: Bárbara Ruiz Tagle se licencia con honores y dirige thriller psicológico del dramaturgo italiano Edoardo Erba

Recently graduating with Maximum Distinction in Psychology from Gabriela Mistral University, Bárbara Ruiz Tagle is set to debut her direction of the psychological thriller Rosalyn, Love is a Thriller at Teatro San Ginés, running from April 10 to 25.

Featuring performances by María Olga Matte and Alessandra Guerzoni, this marks the first adaptation in Chile of the internationally acclaimed playwright Edoardo Erba’s work.

«The production offers an intimate and sensory experience that immerses the audience in the mind of a woman fighting to survive her own story,» the director notes.

«Using a minimalist staging language, the play explores the fine line between identity, memory, and fiction, revealing how individuals can reinvent themselves in the face of pain. I view it as a contemporary, raw, and deeply emotional piece that invites reflection: how far are we willing to transform ourselves to continue living?» she adds.

As she prepares for her licensing exam and plans to commence therapy by the end of the year, Bárbara Ruiz Tagle is also rehearsing for a new play she will star in soon, while actively directing this psychological thriller that depicts the interrogation of world-renowned author Esther O’Sullivan in a Detroit police station, responding to accusations of a murder committed four years ago in Toronto.

To defend herself against persistent questioning, the writer revisits her encounter with Rosalyn, a clumsy and naive woman employed by a cleaning company, whom she met on the day of her book presentation The True Nature of Being.

«This discovery was, quite literally, a treasure. One of its characteristics is introducing profound and complex themes through a seemingly lighthearted narrative; with a relatable, understandable, and accessible language for everyone, showcasing an impressive knowledge of the human soul and its contradictions amid contemporary society while having a remarkable gift for illuminating shades of darkness,» adds Alessandra Guerzoni, who also handled the translation.

Meanwhile, co-star and co-producer María Olga Matte emphasizes the dramatic mechanism that allows their roles to be revealed – through flashbacks – while they reconstruct the crime.

«It playfully illustrates the psychological tools women possess to dissociate and evade when facing difficult, harsh, cruel, and violent situations… it has helped me understand why we endure so much,» she remarks.

«It also suggests that until we integrate what Young refers to as ‘the shadow’, that part of ourselves we dislike and do not accept, we cannot be whole, happy, or at peace. There will always be something that counters us, like the antagonist,» concludes María Olga Matte.
