Original article: “No se pensó en el fútbol”: Bielsa dispara contra pausas de hidratación y apunta al negocio detrás del reglamento
Uruguayan national team head coach Marcelo Bielsa criticized FIFA’s implementation of mandatory water breaks for the 2026 World Cup, stating that this decision was made without considering the game of football.
In a press conference before the group stage match between Uruguay and Cape Verde, the Argentine strategist voiced strong objections to the mandatory interruptions that occur around the 25th and 70th minute of each half, lasting three minutes, allowing players to hydrate. He emphasized that this measure does not cater to any real sports or medical need, but rather serves commercial and advertising interests that disrupt the flow of the game.
His remarks ignited a debate among analysts and fans, especially as he argued that splitting the match into four segments alters the essence of the sport.
Bielsa pointed out that the rule is applied rigidly even in air-conditioned enclosed stadiums, like the one in Miami where the ‘Charrúa’ team drew 2-2 with Cape Verde. The coach believes these breaks highlight that governing bodies did not assess the sporting impact of this decision, prioritizing factors unrelated to athlete welfare.
In his address to the media, the coach elaborated his viewpoint, asserting that playing four quarters instead of two distorts the cultural and tactical understanding that players have historically developed. He emphasized that this fragmentation disrupts the natural flow of the game, affecting intensity, focus, and team strategy: «it adds nothing and takes away much.»
«Playing four quarters instead of two distorts the cultural understanding built around football. It adds nothing and takes away much. When it was divided into four, the potential effects on what made football captivating weren’t considered; instead, other repercussions that I don’t discuss or analyze were prioritized,» he said, making it clear that the regulatory change was not aimed at enhancing the sport but rather addressing external needs not related to the pitch.
The coach firmly stated that the football that captivates crowds was built on specific characteristics that are now being lost. In his view, the essence of the sport lies in its continuity, the excitement of decisive moments, and the ability of teams to navigate the game’s highs and lows. By introducing artificial breaks, the nature of the game is altered, diminishing the experience for both players and spectators.
«Before this decision, football had one characteristic; now it possesses another. People fall in love with the game because of its traits.» he emphasized.
