Two groups of beings from another dimension meet in public space, initially appearing to clash as opposites but ultimately transforming to reveal their complementary nature.
This is the premise of «BOUKI, Crossing the Threshold,» an ambitious street performance based on co-creation and deeply rooted in the social and community fabric of the Lo Espejo neighborhood.
The project, developed at the Cultural Space La Feria, is the outcome of an intense two-and-a-half-month artistic residency, explains one of its directors, Gabriel González. He reveals that participants and volunteers from various disciplines merged their knowledge in three essential laboratories: sound experimentation, movement, and scenic realization that blends object theater and puppetry.
The result is a dynamic urban narrative about two groups of beings who initially seem contrary but reveal their complementary nature throughout the story.
«The focus is on how this encounter produces a profound and significant transformation in both groups,» González states.
«We wanted to highlight the impact of encountering one another and converging as human beings. When these two groups meet on the street, they demonstrate that experiencing the other inevitably transforms us, just like in life, creating profound experiences for everyone involved,» adds the director.
Thus, «BOUKI, Crossing the Threshold» embraces interdisciplinarity, seamlessly blending dance, live music, and large-scale object design.
Narratively, it traverses between science fiction and the stimulation of the collective imagination through a sensory and dreamlike atmosphere that rarely makes its way into public spaces.
In this regard, Gabriel González explains how experiencing art in one’s community is more of a right than a privilege: «One of the fundamental pillars of BOUKI is the democratization of cultural access, breaking the physical boundaries of traditional theater spaces to bring a high-impact technical and artistic show directly to the doorsteps of our neighbors.»
«Bringing this collective and community-oriented experience to public spaces is a vital social necessity. We believe it’s essential to carry these kinds of artistic experiences to areas where accessing formal theater is much more challenging. This enhances society, nourishing it and enriching it with a common language, which is key to communal living,» emphasizes the co-creator of this performance, who, along with Emilia Melo and Gonzalo San Martín, developed this proposal from the multidisciplinary scenic creation laboratories at the Cultural Space La Feria.
In this sense, the performance aims not just to be a visual and auditory milestone for the area but also a political and social catalyst: «The arts are never separate from daily life; they belong to people through their individual and collective actions. Bringing this proposal to neighborhoods opens up dialogue to understand culture as a shared resource, a right, and a means of integral and profound expression,» concluded the director.
«BOUKI, Crossing the Threshold» will be presented in the commune of Padre Hurtado on Saturday, June 20 and in Peñaflor on Sunday, June 21. In Lo Espejo, it will be presented from June 26 to 28 as a free and open-access show for all.
