On Tuesday, May 5th, news broke of the passing of Teresa Regina de Ávila e Silva, the mother of Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila, who is currently imprisoned in Israel after being unlawfully abducted in international waters during the Global Sumud Flotilla.

Local media have reported that this sad news was confirmed by the Union of the Civil Police of the Federal District (Sinpol-DF), whose vice president is Luana de Ávila, daughter of Teresa and sister of Thiago.

«Teresa Regina is remembered as an admirable woman full of joy and strength, whose journey was marked by her ability to face life with grace, dignity, and love. Throughout her life, she built strong bonds with everyone around her, leaving behind affection, presence, and care for her family,» stated the union organization.

Detention of Thiago

On Tuesday, May 5th, Israeli authorities extended the detention of Saif Abu Keshek and Thiago Ávila until Sunday, May 10th. The two activists are being held by Netanyahu’s regime following the raid on the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters.

This information was reported by the portal Resumen Latinoamericano, citing Hadeel Abu Salih, an attorney with the Israeli human rights organization Adalah, which represents the two activists and has publicly denounced that both have suffered mistreatment under Netanyahu’s regime.

«The court granted the police what they requested and has given the green light to continue with this illegal measure,» stated the defense attorney, reiterating her allegations that the activists are enduring psychological torture during their detention.

Israel accuses both Saif Abu Keshek and Thiago Ávila of having ties to the Hamas movement, which they deny. According to Hadeel Abu Salih, the extension of their detention was granted after the Israeli police requested more time to interrogate them.

«We see this as an attempt to criminalize any expression of solidarity with the Palestinian people and any attempts to break the illegal siege of Gaza,» said the attorney, who indicated that they have appealed the decision, an appeal that will be reviewed this Wednesday, May 6th.
