The city of Rio de Janeiro hosted the BRICS Peoples’ Summit from December 1 to 4, as part of the agenda of the Popular Civil Council of the group. The event brought together approximately 150 guests from 21 countries, as reported by Brasil 247, a partner of TV BRICS.
The summit aimed to establish a communication link between popular movements and BRICS, fostering discussions on expanding the participation of civil society from the Global South in global governance mechanisms.
Regarded as «historic,» this initiative marked the first activity of the Popular Civil Council of BRICS and also served as the last major event during Brazil’s presidency of the association before the presidency transitions to India, which will take over in 2026.
According to the Landless Workers Movement (MST), the agenda addressed key issues such as multilateralism, economic cooperation, and the reform of global governance and financial architecture.
Other topics of discussion included the establishment of new payment systems, the use of national currencies in cross-border transactions, and BRICS’ role in global governance reform.
Notable authorities who participated in the discussions included Brazil’s sherpa in the BRICS group, Mauricio Lyrio, and the Deputy Secretary of International Finance and Economic Cooperation at the Ministry of Finance, Antonio Freitas. Additionally, the current president of the New Development Bank (NDB), Dilma Rousseff, participated virtually.

The Popular Civil Council of BRICS was established following discussions at the Civil Forum held during the Kazan Summit in Russia in July 2024. Its creation was supported by the leaders of member countries in the official declaration.
