«Chile Cannot Look the Other Way»: Far-Right International Led by Kast Under Investigation for Corruption in Hungary
Excitement has surged in Chile following Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar’s announcement of an investigation into the potential misuse of public funds related to the financing of the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) and several organizations associated with its global network. This includes the Political Network for Values (PNfV), a far-right platform that was headed by current Chilean President José Kast from 2022 to 2024.
International media reports indicate that the inquiry will be carried out judicially to verify the origin, flow, and final destination of substantial Hungarian public resources, and to determine whether they were systematically diverted to support far-right organizations, foundations, think tanks, summits, media outlets, influencers, and ideological and political networks globally.
This action has the backing of the European Union and has raised alarms within Chile’s right-wing circles, both inside and outside the government, regarding the potential implications for the national President.
In this context, Socialist Party lawmaker Daniel Manouchehri stated that in light of this situation, Chile «cannot look the other way.»
The parliamentarian raised two critical questions: «First, the campaign. Were there any direct or indirect contributions from this network to Kast’s presidential campaign or related campaigns in Chile? In Spain, Vox received 7 million euros from a Hungarian bank for its campaigns. This question is not theoretical,» emphasized Manouchehri.
The second question posed by the legislator concerned «the tour. In January and February, before taking office, Kast undertook an international tour that included a meeting with Orbán in Budapest and a speech in Brussels at an event for that same network. He never disclosed who funded it.»
«It would be good for him to clarify this now,» added the deputy.
