Chile Opposition Criticizes Government Dialogue After Senate Approves Mega-Reform

Following the Senate’s general approval of the «national reconstruction» project promoted by President José A. Kast’s administration, opposition voices have raised concerns regarding the lack of agreements and dialogue from La Moneda, labeling the initiative’s progress as «bad news.»

«Without engaging in dialogue and breaking from republican traditions, President Kast’s government manages to approve (generally) an economic recipe that will create uncertainty in the Chilean economy and has a long track record of failure in various countries,» stated Liberal Party senator Vlado Mirosevic after the vote.

The legislator noted, «In the House, the government approved its mega-reform with the votes of the PDG and in the Senate by just one vote. In summary: they did not want to listen to anyone.»

Echoing these sentiments, members of the Frente Amplio warned that if the project proceeds, it will leave the country with fewer resources, particularly as cuts to essential social benefits for Chileans are being implemented.

«Without agreements or dialogue, they are giving a gift by lowering taxes for the richest 1% while the rest have to tighten their belts,» criticized representatives from the Frente Amplio coalition.

Meanwhile, PC deputy Daniela Serrano emphasized that the mega-reform «was approved by a narrow margin in the Senate, just like in the House,» indicating the government’s tendency to impose its agenda without seeking collaboration.

«This is not a reform to rebuild Chile: it is a project aimed at lowering taxes for large companies and binding the country for the next 25 years,» asserted the parliamentarian.

In a similar vein, Senator Fabiola Campillai remarked, «Today the right approved Kast and Quiroz’s mega-reform, legislating once again with their backs to the public.»

«The actions of this government and its allies demonstrate that their priorities are focused on protecting the privileges of the super-rich while hardworking Chilean families continue to suffer and bear the costs,» stated the representative from the Metropolitan Region.
