Chilean Congress Demands Accountability from Kast Over Paulo Contreras’ Appointment at National Intelligence Agency
Deputy Sofía González (PC), a member of the Chamber’s Control Commission for the State Intelligence System, took advantage of the incident hour during the session to request that formal communication be sent to the President of the Republic and to the Interior and Public Security ministries, asking for a report that explains the hiring of Paulo Contreras as head of the Intelligence Division at the National Intelligence Agency.
The initiative was approved by the Chamber with 54 votes in favor.
According to the explanation provided by the Deputy from District 6, «The publicly known facts in recent days concerning the potential links between the former head of the Counterintelligence Division of the National Intelligence Agency, Mr. Paulo Contreras, and lawyer Luis Hermosilla, are of the utmost seriousness and make it essential to clarify the background considered in evaluating his suitability for such a high-responsibility position.»
In the formal request, Deputy Sofía González asked for a report indicating «what verification protocols and background checks were applied in the appointment of Mr. Paulo Contreras as head of the Counterintelligence Division of the National Intelligence Agency in March 2026; and the actions taken between June 4 and July 3 of this year regarding reports of a possible connection between Mr. Contreras and lawyer Luis Hermosilla.»
Finally, the Deputy from PC informed that «we also requested details on the administrative and internal investigative measures adopted following Mr. Contreras’ resignation.»
