Chilean unions reaffirmed their solidarity with Cuba in light of the energy blockade and the threats of invasion from the United States (US), advocating for the region to remain a Zone of Peace.
During a national meeting held at the headquarters of the Central Unitary Workers (CUT), leaders from various labor organizations affiliated with the Communist Party of Chile (PCCh) condemned the intensified siege by Washington against the island, while calling for strengthened Latin American unity in response to the aggressions of the Trump administration.
On May 1st, the US president signed a new executive order to tighten the coercive measures imposed against Cuba, authorizing sanctions on foreign companies and banks doing business with the Caribbean nation.
This order follows one issued on January 29, 2026, which banned all oil imports to the island.
The decision, justified by the claim that Havana poses a national security threat to the US, allowed for tariffs on goods from countries that supply oil to the island nation, resulting in blackouts of up to 20 hours daily, jeopardizing critical sectors like health, food, and the physical well-being of the residents of this Latin American nation.
Indeed, last week, Cuba’s Minister of Energy and Mines, Vicente de la O Levy, reported that the country had gone four months without receiving fuel. He noted that the 100,000 tons of crude oil delivered to Havana by the Russian tanker Anatoli Kolodkin as humanitarian aid have run out, coinciding with rising temperatures that spike electricity demand.
In this context, the secretary general of the CUT, Eric Campos, told Prensa Latina that for labor organizations, «the fight for peace must be a core element of national and global union actions, as it is essential for stability alongside the self-determination of peoples,» he stated.
Karen Araya, a leader in the education sector from La Florida, warned that the blockade against Cuba is denying its people essential resources for survival, such as food, medicine, and electricity.
Meanwhile, Diego Castillo, the national union coordinator for the Communist Youth, expressed solidarity with Cuban youth who have endured a blockade that has intensified under Trump’s policies for nearly 65 years and faced invasion threats.
«At various points in history, such as during the aggression against Vietnam, it was the global youth that took to the streets to call for peace, not war,» he reminded Prensa Latina.
Bárbara Figueroa, the Secretary General of the Communist Party of Chile and a former union leader, emphasized solidarity with the Cuban Workers’ Central and the island’s citizens during a time when Washington’s threats are growing increasingly severe.
«We have the significant challenge to contribute to a broad and diverse movement for peace and solidarity with the Cuban people,» she affirmed to the cited media.
In response to Trump’s onslaught, in Chile, the Communist Party, youth organizations, labor unions, and other political and social entities are participating in fundraising campaigns to send medications, supplies, food, essential items, and solar panels to help combat the blackouts.
This active solidarity aims to mitigate the siege and maintain Latin America as a Zone of Peace.
