Ahead of the commemoration, the PS released a public statement in response to announcements of budget cuts in key areas. «The Socialist Party of Chile firmly rejects the announced cuts in education, health, and security, which directly affect children, youth, the elderly, and the most vulnerable families,» the document states.
The statement emphasizes that «these measures are not technical or inevitable: they are political decisions that deepen inequality and weaken social rights.» Furthermore, it warns that education programs such as school feeding, scholarships, access to higher education, and strengthening public education will be severely impacted.
Regarding health care, the party warns that «primary care and multiple essential programs that support the well-being of millions are at risk.» In the realm of security and human rights, it adds that «fundamental initiatives such as ‘Violence-Free Streets’ and policies of memory, truth, and justice are being weakened.»
The PS also alerts to economic repercussions: «These cuts will have a profound impact on employment, leading to the loss of thousands of jobs and weakening the social fabric.» In this vein, it questions the narrative of resource scarcity while promoting measures that benefit the wealthiest sectors, concluding that «Chile cannot accept a fiscal adjustment that falls on those who most need the State.» The statement ends with demands for «clarity and responsibility» from the Government, asserting: «We will not allow regressions that compromise the present and future of the country.»
