The General Council of Williche Chiefs in Chiloé has released a public statement expressing their support for the Alto de Fundo Gamboa community and their Lonko, Clementina Lepio Melipichun, following recent reported assaults and violations of rights experienced by community members. Dated June 26, 2026, in Alto de Fundo Gamboa, the document was signed by the Chief Elder Jorge Guenuman Nain, along with other chiefs and traditional authorities from Buta Huapi Chilhué.

The statement emphasizes that the presence of ancestral authorities in the territory is «not an isolated act, but a steadfast demonstration of the unity and strength of our people in the face of adversity», highlighting that the primary purpose of their visit was to convey «deep and unconditional» support for Lonko Clementina Lepio Melipichun, who also serves as the organization’s Secretary General.

The Council recognizes the leader as «a fundamental authority, whose tireless work embodies the values, resilience, and voice of our people», reiterating that her leadership is a reflection of the historical defense of the Williche people in Chiloé.

Moreover, the organization unequivocally condemns the reported incidents, stating, «we categorically reject the cowardly attacks and violations of rights recently suffered by our Lonko and the members of her community». It adds that «we will not tolerate any acts of violence, discrimination, or intimidation that threaten the physical, psychological, and spiritual integrity of our brothers and sisters», describing these events as affronts not only against Alto de Fundo Gamboa but against the entire Williche people of Chiloé.

The statement further indicates that those resorting to violence seek to undermine the defense of the territory; however, it warns that the organization «will not accept attempts to hinder the just and legitimate defense of our territory, the protection of our natural environment, and the preservation of our cultural identity». In this context, it emphasizes that this endeavor represents a «sacred mission», passed down from their ancestors, aimed at safeguarding life spaces for future generations.

In conclusion, the General Council of Williche Chiefs reaffirms its commitment to defending their collective rights and territory, stating that «the defense of our land, our water, and our rights is non-negotiable», and that «we will remain steadfast, dignified, and united, without taking a single step back in our historic struggle».
