The government of China has allocated a total of $17 million to assist in reconstruction efforts in Venezuela following the devastating earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 that struck on June 24 and their aftershocks.
The acting president of the Caribbean nation, Delcy Rodríguez, formally expressed her gratitude for the contribution from the Asian giant, calling it a «genuine act of profound humanity» on the part of Xi Jinping’s government.
The funding from China is divided into two main action areas. $2 million will be directed to the housing construction plan initiated by the Venezuelan government to support families who lost their homes. The remaining $15 million will provide essential supplies, equipment, and materials to expedite the restoration of basic services in the hardest-hit areas.
«We thank the Government of the People’s Republic of China for their solidarity with the Venezuelan people in this tragedy,» stated Rodríguez on her social media.
The cooperation goes beyond financial assistance. Beijing has provided high-resolution satellite images to facilitate better mapping of the affected areas, a crucial technical support for rescue brigades still operating on the ground. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun announced last Monday that this aid would be sent «as soon as possible» to the South American nation and reiterated their intention to continue providing further assistance «according to the evolving situation on the ground and the needs stemming from the disaster.»
According to TeleSUR, the private sector has also played a significant role in the emergency. Chinese companies operating in Venezuela have contributed heavy machinery and sanitary supplies for the rescue efforts amid a situation that has directly impacted their nationals: the earthquake resulted in eight fatalities among citizens from the Asian nation, with one still missing.
The official toll of the tragedy, as updated by Venezuelan authorities, reports that there are currently 1,719 deceased and around 5,034 injured, while the number of displaced individuals has risen to 15,866 and a total of 22,619 people have received medical attention at government-operated centers. The magnitude of the disaster has sparked an unprecedented international response: 30 countries have sent rescue brigades, which consist of 3,681 rescuers, 1,086 tons of supplies, 27 vehicles, and 118 canines to strengthen search and rescue efforts in the Caribbean nation.
The reconstruction plan promoted by Rodríguez’s administration aims not only to repair damaged infrastructure but also to create new homes for the thousands of families left homeless. The infusion of resources from China aligns with this goal, aiming to accelerate this process.
Acting President Delcy Rodríguez emphasized that this support will facilitate the restoration of basic services and the creation of new homes.
As rescue teams continue their work in the most affected areas, China’s assistance emerges as a crucial component in the recovery phase. The combination of direct funding for housing, material supplies, and satellite technology positions the Asian giant as one of the most active partners in responding to the disaster.
