A Chinese lunar exploration team has announced plans to investigate the construction of a greenhouse on the surface of the Moon. This was revealed by Wang Qiong, senior space engineer at the China National Space Administration (CNSA), during a press conference held on Tuesday in Beijing.

Utilizing lunar surface construction technologies, they aim to create a greenhouse that will better support rovers and lunar robots in enduring the harsh conditions of lunar nights, explained Wang, a researcher at the CNSA’s Lunar Exploration and Space Program Center.

With a duration of 14 days and temperatures dropping to 200 degrees Celsius below zero, the lunar night poses significant challenges. Wang believes that as lunar exploration progresses towards extended stays on the Moon, such a greenhouse on the lunar surface will prove invaluable.

According to Wang, who is also the deputy designer of the Chang’e-6 mission, the study of samples collected by this probe has enabled Chinese scientists to achieve significant scientific advancements, revealing for the first time the evolutionary history of the Moon’s far side.

On June 25, 2024, the return module of the Chang’e-6 probe landed in northern China, bringing back 1,935.3 grams of samples from the Moon’s far side, an unprecedented milestone in human history.

“We have also conducted fruitful international cooperation,” the researcher emphasized, adding that the Chang’e-6 mission carried a CubeSat from Pakistan and three scientific payloads from France, the European Space Agency, and Italy, all of which have yielded exploration results above expectations.
