From museums dedicated to this ancient practice to century-old wellness centers and pharmacies, an increasing number of foreign visitors are engaging with its practices and insights to experience China from a distinctive perspective.
A recent survey by the China Academy of Tourism reveals that over 60% of foreign tourists consider immersing themselves in Chinese culture as a primary reason for visiting the country. In Sanya, located in the southern province of Hainan, visitors from Russia, Germany, and France participate in wellness activities rooted in traditional Chinese medicine by the sea. This experience blends tropical weather with traditional therapies and culture, creating a novel proposal that fuses tourism and wellbeing.
Meanwhile, in the eastern province of Zhejiang, international tourists learn to make aromatic herbal sachets in a traditional Chinese medicine pharmacy with centuries of history. This activity allows them to closely explore the medicinal properties of plants and some of the traditions associated with this ancient discipline.
«Not only am I enjoying acupuncture and massages, but the climate in Sanya is also wonderful—it’s almost like being at home. Through traditional Chinese wellness exercises, such as tai chi and Chinese calligraphy, I feel both physically and mentally renewed,» said Nali, a tourist from Germany.
«I’ve heard about traditional Chinese medicine for a long time, but what I saw today exceeded my expectations. I saw many Chinese medicinal herbs that I had never encountered or heard of before. Chinese medicine feels very natural, and that might be one of its biggest advantages,» expressed Peyov Peev, a tourist from Bulgaria.
