Original article: «Cine, desobediencia y futuros posibles»: Red Salas de Cine continúa su recorrido por el país con foros sobre películas chilenas
«Cinema, Disobedience, and Possible Futures» marks the fourth edition of the Month of the Red Salas de Cine, which will travel to 16 screening venues across the country, highlighting the significance of independent theaters as vital spaces for showcasing diverse cinema.
Organized by the Chilean Association of Independent Cinema Theaters, the event is funded by the Support Program for Collaborating Cultural Organizations, Call 2026, from the Ministry of Cultures, Arts, and Heritage.
This year’s lineup features 19 feature films, including fiction and documentary works, along with a special segment dedicated to video art short films, presented in affiliated theaters from Antofagasta to Coyhaique.
The festival will focus on three thematic areas: Dystopia, showcasing essential works that examine future imaginations as critical tools of the present; Territory and Memory, which explores borders, margins, and traces of the past; and Bodies in Dispute, centering on stories addressing gender and diversity struggles for autonomy, identity, and rights.
Moreover, there are two special segments: one dedicated to Iranian director Jafar Panahi, one of the most significant filmmakers today; and another featuring video art, showcasing winners from the Juan Downey International Media and Audiovisual Arts Competition 2025.
Through national and international films that reflect the tensions, conflicts, and experiences of their times, this edition of the Month of the Red aims to view cinema as a space for resistance, imagination, and transformation, encouraging reflection and dialogue on the themes presented in each film.
One of the distinctive hallmarks of this event will be various film forums held across the country, emphasizing the cinema hall as a key location for gathering, dialogue, and reflection.
«In a context where access to images is also affected by territorial inequalities, programming Chilean, Latin American, auteur, and experimental cinema in different regions of the country is a way to democratize the cinematic experience,» expressed Daniela Fuentes Posada, the general coordinator of the Red Salas de Cine.
In this regard, she added, «We do not seek merely to screen films but to create spaces for encounters between the works and their audiences, through forums that allow for discussions about the present and collectively imagine other possible futures.»
Among the film forums organized by the Red Salas de Cine together with participating theaters is the acclaimed film The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo, directed by prominent filmmaker Diego Céspedes, which has already attracted a large audience in Antofagasta, Coyhaique, and some theaters in Santiago.
Its lead actor Matias Catalán, who plays the flamenco in the film, has represented the team and participated in these enriching dialogue sessions with the audience and will continue touring over the next few weeks at Centro Cultural San Antonio, CasaVerde in Los Andes, and CCC in Santiago.
Meanwhile, the classic Caluga o menta, directed by Gonzalo Justiniano, has already held two forums with a very engaged audience interested in learning more about this film, which marks its 36th anniversary since its release. Its director will also be present at a third conversation session at INSOMNIA Teatro Condell in Valparaíso.
Other films featuring forums include the award-winning national film Matapanki, directed by Diego «Mapache» Fuentes, which will be screened at Cine Club UACh with the director’s presence; and The Ship of Forgetting, directed by Nicol Ruiz, who has already taken part in an intimate screening at -1 CINE and is preparing to visit the Centro Cultural de Padre Las Casas.
