Venezuela is under constitutional emergency following two back-to-back earthquakes measuring 7.1 and 7.5 that shook large portions of the country Wednesday afternoon. Acting President Delcy Rodríguez activated a contingency command center and ordered the deployment of civil protection agencies to respond to the emergency.
The measures include the suspension of classes for the remainder of the week and the halt of non-essential work activities, aiming to prioritize rescue operations, medical assistance for the injured, and damage assessments on homes, essential services, and critical infrastructure.
The seismic activities particularly impacted various parishes in Caracas and the states of Miranda, La Guaira, Carabobo, Falcón, Yaracuy, Aragua, Trujillo, and Zulia. Emergency teams are actively deployed on-site to conduct search and rescue operations and provide support to the hardest-hit communities.
According to official reports, there have been power outages in Caracas and La Guaira. In contrast, water supply and telecommunications are generally operational, although under continuous monitoring.
As part of the emergency response, the metro system and railway services have been suspended to facilitate rescue operations. Simultaneously, Maiquetía International Airport remains closed due to severe infrastructural damage, halting all operations while technical inspections are conducted.
The contingency command center comprises sectorial vice presidents Diosdado Cabello, Juan José Ramírez, Héctor Rodríguez, and Calixto Ortega. Operational coordination has been assigned to Major General Juan Ernesto Sulbarán Quintero, commander of the Venezuelan National Guard.
The public and private healthcare network has been mobilized to accommodate affected individuals. The government has also requested that doctors, nurses, and healthcare staff return to work to enhance hospital response capabilities.
Authorities have also established a digital tool linked to the command center, enabling citizens to report disappearances, structural damages, or hazardous situations in their homes.
Delcy Rodríguez expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and urged the public to remain calm, cooperate with emergency teams, and allow risk inspections in their homes.
Following the constitutional emergency in Venezuela, governments across Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, and the Middle East, along with the UN and multilateral organizations, have expressed solidarity and offered immediate support to the country.
