The Climate Science and Resilience Center (CR2) will continue its operations by enhancing the «Regional Ecosystems and Environment» component within the National Interest Activities Program of the University of Chile.
This program dates back to the 1990s and allows the University of Chile to contribute to the country in various areas, including the maintenance of the National Symphony Orchestra, the Chilean National Ballet, the University Choir, the National Seismological Center, and the network of National Museums, among other initiatives.
Regarding the agreement that will facilitate CR2’s operations, it includes activities focused on applied research, education, university extension, generating climate information, integrated environmental analysis, and knowledge transfer developed by specialized academic teams from the University of Chile, particularly emphasizing climate and resilience.
The rector of the University, Rosa Devés, explained that «the allocation of resources from the National Interest Activities, directed towards environmental initiatives, is crucial for maintaining the interdisciplinary scientific work of the CR2, which aligns with the University’s commitment to sustainability and national contributions through research.»
«This decision recognizes the strategic importance of the Center’s activities for understanding and addressing the climate crisis, as well as its contribution to generating rigorous and relevant knowledge that serves public policy,» added Rector Devés.
In this context, the academic highlighted the value of CR2’s collaborative and interdisciplinary work, which integrates diverse perspectives to tackle complex challenges, thereby strengthening the role of the University as a key player in building sustainable development.
Roberto Rondanelli, director of CR2, emphasized that the decision to ensure the continuity of the Center’s academic work is critical to the functioning of the state, as its closure would have weakened strategic activities, such as the implementation of public policy on climate change and the development of adaptation and mitigation programs at the sectoral and community level.
In this regard, Susana Bustos, executive director of CR2, announced that «despite this funding, the Center will continue to seek other sources to complement this crucial baseline funding.»
Furthermore, it was reported that CR2 will not only maintain its support for researchers but also its physical and digital infrastructure, including essential data platforms and observation sites for evidence-based decision-making regarding climate change impacts in Chile.
«CR2 is internationally recognized for its academic excellence. In fact, it has six researchers participating as authors in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the leading global scientific body in this field,» director Roberto Rondanelli noted.
Notably, in 2025, some researchers from CR2 were selected to join the international team for the seventh assessment cycle of the IPCC. They include academics Marco Billi, Eugenia Gayó, Nicolás Huneeus, Gabriela Guevara, Mauricio Osses, and Pamela Smith. Additionally, CR2 researcher Laura Gallardo serves as vice-chair of the IPCC Working Group II.
