Controversial Statement by Labor Reactivation Expert

“Every person is a burden”. This was the shocking statement made by economist David Bravo, head of the Labor Reactivation Panel, referring to workers in a corporate context during an interview on Tele13. He argued that severance pay and dismissal costs hinder hiring practices.

The expert used this analogy to illustrate how increased exit costs make hiring employees appear problematic or burdensome to companies.

Following his remarks, the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (CUT) reacted strongly on social media with a powerful statement. “The essence of the expert committee is laid bare, reflecting a deep disdain towards workers from David Bravo and the labor reactivation commission that just delivered its proposals to the Ministry of Labor,” the labor union declared.

The CUT warned that these comments expose the true perspective of the experts: “Ultimately, for them, ‘having rights is a burden.’ This reflects the real nature of the hidden labor reform proposed by Kast’s government, which seeks to undermine our working conditions, loosen rights, and cheapen layoffs.” The union criticized this approach as reducing the value of workers’ efforts to merely an «economic cost of dismissal.»

“We cannot allow national employment policies to be based on demeaning those who uplift it day by day, seeking only economic benefits for employers,” concluded the CUT, urging the government to reevaluate the panel’s approach, which, according to the union, starts from a premise that disregards the dignity of work.

The People’s Defense for Workers also addressed the issue, stating through a video: “The discussion triggered by David Bravo’s remarks isn’t just about a phrase. It relates to a series of proposals that aim to loosen work hours, modify severance pay for years of service, and reduce employment costs(…) What is the risk? That labor rights begin to be viewed as obstacles rather than minimum guarantees for workers.”
