Denialism Cloaked as ‘Truth’: Libertarian Deputies Urge Kast to Establish a ‘Museum of Truth’ to Rewrite Chile’s Popular Unity Memory
A group of seven lawmakers from the Libertarian National Party (PNL) has formally requested President José Antonio Kast to create a «Museum of Truth» aimed at rewriting the memory of the Popular Unity period in Chile.
The resolution was submitted to the Chamber of Deputies last Monday, coinciding with the far-right leader’s first public address, and has been signed by legislators Paulina Muñoz, Gloria Naveillán, Pier Karlezi, Erich Grohs, Cristóbal Urruticoechea, Álvaro Jofré, and Hans Marowski.
Specifically, this proposal seeks to develop a «Museum of Truth: The Abuse, Hunger, and Humiliation Suffered by the People of Chile during the Popular Unity Government (1970-1973).»
In the document, the lawmakers of the party founded by ultranationalist Johannes Kaiser requested Kast to «instruct the Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage, the Ministry of Public Works, and the National Monuments Council to draft and implement this denialist initiative.»
According to the ‘libertarians’, the goal is to «preserve the complete and true historical memory of the victims of scarcity, political violence, the breakdown of the rule of law, and the economic chaos that characterized that period.»
In their drive to rewrite history, they propose to «educate new generations of Chileans on the entirety of their recent history.»
The resolution goes further, asserting that this «truth» must be preserved and presented by the State of Chile, «free of ideological bias, convenient omissions, and the monopoly of a single narrative on recent history.»
According to these far-right lawmakers, for decades, the official memory of the 1970-1973 period «has been constructed almost exclusively from the perspective of those who supported the Popular Unity government.»
They noted that currently, Chile has institutions, museums, and memorials «dedicated to remembering the victims of human rights violations that occurred after September 11, 1973,» without acknowledging the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet.
Although they stated that these sites «are legitimate and necessary,» they argue that historical memory «cannot be selective,» nor can it «remember only some victims while ignoring others.»
«It cannot construct a narrative that begins on September 11, 1973, as if the history of Chile did not exist before that date,» they emphasized.
Call for Itinerant Exhibit Near September 11
For the ‘libertarians’, a Museum of Truth about the Popular Unity would be «not a space for propaganda or hatred,» but rather, «an area for rigorous historical education based on documents, testimonies, photographs, economic records, and primary sources,» which they claim would provide «an accurate account of what realmente happened in Chile between 1970 and 1973.»
They defended the notion that the «victims» of this period «have been systematically silenced by an official narrative that romanticizes that time as a ‘revolution with flavors of empanadas and red wine,’ deliberately erasing the pain felt by millions of Chileans who experienced it very differently.»
Under the view of the seven PNL parliamentarians, the process of reconciliation can only be built «upon the truth» that they advocate, and they urged the president to «consider inaugurating at least one itinerant exhibit around September 11 this year in commemoration of the events of 1973.
