Deputy Carolina Tello, a member of the Fisheries Commission, expressed her strong support for artisanal fishing and the protection of current jibia regulations during a meeting attended by leaders from various regions of the country, along with legislators from both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.
The lawmaker asserted that the extraction of this resource must be conducted using selective fishing methods, such as using jigs and hand lines, firmly rejecting the idea of reinstating dragging methods for its capture.
«We will defend the jibia resource from being harvested through dragging, which is detrimental not only to the environment but also to the economy, productivity, and the livelihoods of many families who rely on this resource, which has been a staple in the artisanal fishing community for many years,» stated Deputy Tello.
«We will defend the jibia resource with all our might. Dragging is brutal, not only for the damage it causes to marine sediments and ecosystems, but also because it is incredibly unfair to artisanal fisheries,» she added.
Senator Daniela Ciccardini highlighted the importance of artisanal fishing organizations and called for continued coordinated efforts between leaders and their parliamentary representatives, both in regions and at Congress, regarding the discussion around jibia fishing through dragging.
«This work has been developed by you, in artisanal fishing, in various regions along with your legislators. We will do our part here in Congress. This motion originates in the Senate, so there is still a legislative path ahead, and it must be analyzed by the Chamber afterward,» Senator Ciccardini stated.
During the session, representatives of artisanal fishermen’s organizations urged senators to reject the initiative currently under discussion in the Senate Fisheries Commission.
Sara Garrido from the National Corporation of Women in Artisanal Fishing and Related Activities warned that the incorporation of dragging could lead to consequences similar to those experienced in the hake fishery: «Today, jibia is the hope for future generations. We will defend jibia; it belongs to artisanal fishing and must be 100% artisanal,» Garrido insisted.
Similarly, Saúl Lagos, spokesman for the National Jibieros Coordinator, defended the current legislation and called for respect for regulations that establish selective capture methods: «The jibia law, won by a broad majority, we will defend at all costs,» the leader said.
Finally, Deputy Tello called for strengthening collaborative work between artisanal fishing organizations and their parliamentary representatives across various regions, as was done during the discussion that established the current jibia capture regulations.
It is worth noting that the meeting was attended, in addition to Senator Ciccardini, by Senators Daniel Núñez, Diego Ibáñez, Karol Cariola, and Deputies Cristián Tapia, Consuelo Veloso, Patricio Pinilla, Guillermo Valdés, Bernardo Salinas, Daniel Manoucheri, Matías Fernández, and Cristian Neira, along with various leaderships from artisanal fishing, related activities, and SMEs.
