Deputy Tello Urges Immediate Short Law for Reconstruction in Coquimbo Region

Carolina Tello, the leader of the Frente Amplio congressional group and deputy representing the Coquimbo region, has called for an immediate short law for reconstruction in the Coquimbo region. She stated, «We need a response now, not in two or three weeks. There are people missing, families who have lost everything, and entire communities awaiting support. The government still has time to present a short law that allows resources to reach those in need as quickly as this emergency demands,» Tello emphasized.

The legislator reminded that she requested a State of Catastrophe declaration for the Coquimbo Region since Saturday, warning that this measure would allow for timely access to emergency resources.

However, she criticized the fact that the declaration was only finalized on Monday and pointed out that its primary effect so far has been the deployment of the armed forces without adequate action in the most affected areas.

«Today, efforts must focus where people are isolated and where damage is most severe, such as in Monte Patria, Ovalle, and the fishing coves that have lost almost everything. We cannot exploit the pain of an entire region to obscure a reform that benefits the super-rich,» she asserted.

Deputy Tello highlighted that the Frente Amplio had previously engaged in discussions with regional authorities to alert them to the risks associated with heavy rains, warning about possible sinkholes, overflowing rivers, and impacts on wetlands.

Moreover, she noted that the emergency has caused road blockages, the loss of bridges, and interruptions along Route 5, effectively splitting the Coquimbo region. In this context, she announced that the opposition would take legal action against the mega-reform, criticizing the government’s denial of climate change.

«Climate change is hitting us hard in the Coquimbo region. What we need are direct and timely aids, not to conceal them within a reform we consider profoundly detrimental to the country,» she stated.

Finally, Deputy Tello clarified that the Frente Amplio has always been ready to promptly approve the funds allocated for reconstruction, provided they are separated from the mega-reform. «We said from the very beginning: if the government separated the reconstruction chapter and expedited its discussion, we would approve it the next day. That remains our position,» she explained.
