Chongqing’s tourism authority reported that in 2025, the municipality welcomed over 2 million international tourists, marking a year-on-year increase of 68.2%. Between January and March 2026, the city saw a record 60.3% rise in international arrivals, with visitors from Southeast Asia making up the largest group.
Pattaraanong Na Chiangmai, Deputy Director of International Marketing for Asia and the South Pacific, highlighted what makes Chongqing unique, stating, «I would say it is a relatively new destination globally, especially for Thai tourists. I believe Chongqing appeals more to Generation Z and millennials, who enjoy vibrant cities, nightlife, lights, and especially, the food.»
Recently, Chongqing signed letters of intent and memoranda of understanding to enhance tourism cooperation with Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports and Sri Lanka’s Tourism Promotion Bureau in the autonomous district of Miao and Tujia ethnicities in Pengshui. Both parties praised Chongqing’s unique allure and committed to fostering collaboration in areas such as tourism, visitor exchanges, and expanding travel routes between their countries and the Chinese metropolis.
Nyamaa Enkhbold, Mongolia’s ambassador to China, expressed his amazement, saying, «What impressed me most is that Chongqing has 32 million residents, while Mongolia has only 3.5 million. That 33 million people can live in peace, harmony, and experience such rapid development is truly remarkable. I believe that if you genuinely want to progress, regardless of population size or territory, development is attainable.»
Meanwhile, Andrey Tehov, Bulgaria’s ambassador to China, shared, «I hope more tourists learn about Bulgaria, and that many Bulgarians travel to China. The one-month visa waiver policy significantly boosts this tourism exchange. Recently, many Bulgarians have visited here thanks to this measure.»
«Discovering the Beauty of China» is a cultural exchange initiative led by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. During the event, attendees visited various locations in Chongqing, including the ancient village of Ciqikou in Shapingba District, the Chiyou Jiuli City in Pengshui, the Three Natural Bridges in Wulong, and the Dazu rock carvings, where they experienced the richness of local culture firsthand.
