As part of World Book Day 2026, Ediciones UTEM (Metropolitan Technological University) has organized a series of public activities that combine contemporary reflection and the promotion of reading, focusing on one of the most pressing debates in the cultural field today: the impact of artificial intelligence on writing.
The program is highlighted by the panel discussion «A Death Match Between the Pen and the Prompt: AI in Narrative and Academic Communication,» which will bring together American journalist and author Jonathan Franklin and University of Chile academic Alejandro Morales.
This event will address the transformations currently affecting literary and academic production, in a context where AI-based tools are beginning to influence creative processes traditionally associated with human authorship.
While some experts argue that these technologies help overcome the «blank page syndrome,» others caution against potential effects on originality and critical thinking.
«It is of utmost importance and urgency to address the relationship between artificial intelligence and writing, especially at a university with a strong technological emphasis, where the possibilities offered by these increasingly advanced tools must entail an ethical and professional reflection on copyright, intellectual property, creation, and related issues,» stated Nicole Fuentes, Director of Extension at UTEM.
The panel discussion will take place on Thursday, April 23 at 11:00 AM in the Co Work Room of the Faculty of Legal and Social Sciences at Metropolitan Technological University, located at 1620 Miguel de Olivares, floor -1, Santiago.

Additionally, as part of the celebration, UTEM Publishing will host the activity «Books are Flying!» consisting of free book giveaways in various university spaces.
These events will take place on the same Thursday, April 23, following the panel discussion, and will continue on April 29 and 30 at the Ñuñoa and Providencia campuses, respectively.
