Aware of the need for issues in Chile to escape the confines of a limited informational bubble and recognizing the importance of internationalizing its journalistic work, El Ciudadano has launched its German edition, now available at derburger.net.
This launch adds to the English version, which has been active for several months at thecitizen.news.
Both initiatives strengthen El Ciudadano’s internationalization efforts initiated in 2022 with the opening of an office in Puebla, Mexico, where an independent editorial team produces content published at elciudadano.mx.
According to the founder of the media outlet, Bruno Sommer, «The main goal is to bring the Latin American narrative to the world directly and without intermediaries. This is about making our right to freedom of expression tangible and realizing our narrative emancipation through direct action.»
Javier Pineda, the director of El Ciudadano, noted that «with over 20 years of experience in the news industry and robust social networks, El Ciudadano has established itself as a key space for distributing content that transcends national borders for social organizations.»
The commitment to expand coverage beyond Chile stems from the belief that news from the country should not be confined within its territorial limits. This expansion is crucial not only for highlighting and denouncing transnational companies that violate regulations or rights but also for promoting investment in Latin America and showcasing the artistic and cultural endeavors of Chilean social organizations in the Global South.
“We have witnessed that there is much ignorance outside of Chile regarding what truly happens in our country. Breaking the informational blockade both locally and internationally is part of our work, which would not have been possible without colleagues who have supported our development by leveraging technology in favor of freedom of expression,” Sommer emphasized.
With the German edition, El Ciudadano takes a new step in its strategy to reach diverse audiences, providing a committed perspective on social transformation processes from Latin America to the world.
