FECH Mobilizes 100 Volunteers to Support Flood Relief Efforts in Lo Espejo, Cerro Navia, La Cisterna, and Puente Alto

Under the motto «La Chile ayuda a Chile» (Chile Helps Chile), approximately 100 volunteers from the Federation of Students at the University of Chile have taken to the streets of Lo Espejo, La Cisterna, Cerro Navia, and Puente Alto to assist with volunteer work in clearing flooded streets filled with water and mud, building and distributing sandbags, and offering their support to local municipalities.

In Lo Espejo, work began on Thursday along Avenida La Feria, Callejón Lo Ovalle, and Marcela Paz, where university students removed branches and shoveled mud, thereby clearing sidewalks and streets for local residents.

This initiative, which originated from the student federation, aims to show solidarity and engage with the community, and it has seen strong participation from future professionals, extending its reach to the municipalities of Puente Alto and Cerro Navia.

Laura Mlynarz, president of FECH, stated that «students must fulfill our role of being available to meet the needs of the people of Chile. Youth has not only the rebellious spirit but also the energy to contribute labor, enthusiasm, and the knowledge we have, especially in times of emergency.»

Mlynarz emphasized that «a frontal system like this does not affect all communities equally across the country; rather, there is structural inequality that is also reflected in the consequences. In some peripheral neighborhoods of the Metropolitan Region, streets resemble rivers, and homes are flooded.»

Javiera Reyes, the mayor of Lo Espejo, expressed gratitude to the FECH volunteers, saying, «They allowed us to carry out much of the removal work. This effort builds community, and it is deeply appreciated by local residents.»

Reyes also mentioned that she urged Minister Poduje to implement a real solution for Avenida Lo Espejo, an area that has historically flooded in this popular community and was once again cleared by municipal workers and student volunteers, while awaiting the state to fulfill a longstanding demand.

Finally, representatives from FECH stated that volunteer efforts will continue even after the adverse weather subsides, and they invited university students to join this call alongside Confech.
