Artisanal fishermen in the Coquimbo region are facing a distressing situation in their fishing villages following the recent rain front. According to Fepemach, approximately 14 fishing villages are currently cut off: about 10 in the Limarí Province, 2 in Choapa, and 2 in Elqui. Puerto Aldea is isolated, and La Higuera is also experiencing issues, potentially impacting over 1,200 individuals.
Leonardo Ocares, president of Fepemach, stated, «We belong to primarily rural communes, where there are small farmers and livestock owners, and we are often invisible. We have talked extensively with our community, and we are isolated; we do not need vouchers or food supplies; we need to reactivate our fishing activities, and for that, we require connectivity and roads in good condition.»
Deputy Carolina Tello met with them to discuss the concerning access to the fishing villages in their province and across the region. «About 14 fishing villages are cut off, and the roads have yet to be cleared. They have been unable to work for a week now. We need the additional resources from the Regional Government that have been made available during this emergency to be utilized in the medium to long term,» she noted.
The communities need culverts and large pipes to facilitate access for these thousands of people working in the isolated fishing villages. «It is also necessary to continue working on enrolling rural roads providing access to different fishing villages in our region. This is not only about families and artisanal fishermen but about our region as a whole,» the legislator asserted.
