Original article: Fetrapes pide medidas urgentes al Ministerio de Vivienda por trabajadores de Tapusa sin pago de sueldos
The Fish Workers Federation and Related Branches, Fetrapes, has expressed solidarity with hundreds of workers involved in Serviu projects, who are currently facing uncertainty regarding the payment of their wages and social security contributions.
This organization, representing maritime workers from the central-southern region of the country, highlighted to Minister Iván Poduje that current legal frameworks provide specific mechanisms for state intervention.
Fetrapes formally reached out to the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, requesting urgent protective measures for the workers affected by the situation revolving around the company Tapusa, a construction firm associated with projects executed for the Housing and Urban Development Services (Serviu).
According to a letter signed by Juan Montenegro S., president of Fetrapes, hundreds of workers who have diligently rendered their services are now uncertain about the payment of their wages and social security contributions, which directly impacts their families and communities.
«Protecting workers’ rights is a responsibility that engages the entire society. Those who have fulfilled their duty to work should not bear the brunt of these adverse consequences,» Juan Montenegro S. emphasized.
In the letter, the Federation points out that Article 96 of Supreme Decree No. 236 — which regulates the General Bases for Contracting Works of the Housing and Urban Development Services — expressly empowers Serviu to pay outstanding wages and social security dues owed by the contractor, charging these amounts against pending payments owed to the contractor.
Therefore, the organization is requesting that this and all available legal tools be utilized with the utmost urgency.
Fetrapes also called for a review and strengthening of protective mechanisms in cases of corporate insolvency or abandonment of projects, ensuring that the system provides timely responses to affected workers in the future.
«We are maritime workers, but the defense of labor rights is not confined to specific sectors. Today, we raise our voices for those in need, because tomorrow it could be any one of us,» expressed Juan Montenegro S.
The letter was sent with copies to the President of the Republic, the Minister of Labor and Social Welfare, the National Director of the Labor Directorate, and to members of Congress from the Biobío Region.
We will continue to provide updates.
