The Oral Criminal Court in Copiapó sentenced former Atacama Intendente Francisco Sánchez Barrera to 4 years in effective prison on Friday, May 15, for the completed crime of fraud, committed between 2013 and 2018 against the Atacama Kozan Mining Contracting Company.

Upon learning of the verdict, plaintiff’s attorney Mauricio Daza stated, «This is a very significant conviction, as we achieved it without the support of the Public Prosecutor’s Office, since, in an inexplicable decision by former regional prosecutor of Atacama Alexis Rogat, it was decided not to pursue the case, unjustifiably claiming that there was insufficient evidence for a conviction in this matter.»

«In this context, obtaining a prison sentence was even more challenging,» added Daza, highlighting that «former Atacama Intendente Francisco Sánchez was sentenced to 4 years in effective prison as the perpetrator of the fraud against Atacama Kozan, amounting to over 200 million pesos. Additionally, Rodrigo Albornoz, Sánchez’s collaborator, received a two-year suspended sentence as an accomplice in the fraud.»

«While this represents a great professional satisfaction for us after years of litigation, this sentence constitutes a minimal act of justice,» emphasized lawyer Mauricio Daza.
