Former Chilean President Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle will return to diplomatic duties as the government of José Antonio Kast has appointed him as Chile’s Special Ambassador. This position is intended to represent the country on strategic foreign policy and international relations tasks.
According to various media reports, this decision comes months after Frei publicly endorsed Kast during the 2025 presidential campaign, an action that caused internal tensions within the Christian Democratic Party, leading to the suspension of his party membership.
“Disgraceful”: Daniel Manouchehri Criticizes Frei’s Acceptance of Kast’s Offer While Government Celebrates Dictatorship That Victimized His Father
Deputy Daniel Manouchehri harshly reacted on his X account regarding the appointment. In his post, he described the decision as “a disgraceful political maneuver”. Manouchehri claimed that President Kast “hides behind the Frei name to pretend to be pluralistic”, accusing the leader of using the former president’s stature to project a false image of political openness.
The deputy also directly questioned former President Frei for accepting the position, stating, “And the former President accepts, knowing that those who govern today are the same ones who glorify a dictatorship that victimized his father”. This statement highlights the perceived contradiction of Frei Ruiz-Tagle—son of former president Eduardo Frei Montalva, who died under circumstances related to the dictatorship—accepting a role in a government that praises military rule.
Manouchehri concluded with a striking statement: “Disgraceful,” asserting that “these are the actions that truly degrade politics.” The role of Special Ambassador that Frei will hold is an extraordinary diplomatic representation allowing the Chilean State to assign specific tasks to a high-level figure, typically involving international promotion, participation in seminars, multilateral meetings, and strategic negotiations abroad.
