The Oral Criminal Court in Cañete has convicted former Renaico mayor, Juan Carlos Reinao Marilao, for multiple counts of repeated statutory rape, abortion, and sexual abuse against various victims.
Additionally, the court upheld a civil lawsuit filed by one of the victims, confirming responsibility for damages on the part of the former mayor.
The sentence for Juan Carlos Reinao will be announced on Friday, August 7 at 2:00 PM.
It is important to note that investigations by the Public Prosecutor’s Office revealed that between 2006 and 2020, Reinao exploited his position as mayor to commit these crimes against five victims, two of whom were adolescents at the time. The incidents took place in the municipalities of Tirúa, Contulmo, Renaico, Santiago, and Negrete.
According to the case investigation, one of the victims was allegedly raped by the former mayor when she was a teenager, leading to her pregnancy and subsequent forced abortion, arranged by Reinao, who sent her to Ecuador for the procedure, as reported by El Ciudadano at the time.
