Original article: Dan de baja a 4 carabineros por robar cajetillas de cigarrillos de contrabando desde camión volcado en Cartagena
The San Antonio Carabineros Prefecture announced that, following an internal investigation, four officers were dismissed «for failing to properly secure evidence during a cigarette smuggling operation.»
The dismissed officers were part of the Second Police Station in Cartagena. The incident came to light after a truck carrying contraband cigarettes overturned in the Lo Zárate slope area.
Meanwhile, in statements to Radio Biobío, Regional Presidential Delegate Manuel Millones confirmed that among those involved is a Carabineros captain, who allegedly distributed a pack of cigarettes to each officer present at the operation.
However, other sources cited by local media suggest that each officer may have taken an entire carton of cigarettes.
Lastly, it was reported that the details of the case are already with the Military Prosecutor’s Office, and the four individuals involved are now on notice, meaning they are at liberty and awaiting summons from the Justice system.
We will continue to provide updates.
