Original article: «Ya se ha intentado antes y no ha funcionado»: Frente Amplio cuestiona idea de Kast de volver a aplicar en Chile la «teoría del chorreo»
In a video shared on their social media, the Frente Amplio warned that Kast’s government is attempting to reapply the controversial «trickle-down theory» in Chile, stating that this approach «has been tried before and has not worked».
The video outlines the basic premise of this theory: «The idea is quite simple, benefit the wealthy with tax cuts so they can become even richer, and with that, their wealth will ‘trickle down’ to others».
«However, this concept is nothing new,» added members of the collective. «It has been tried by US presidents like Reagan, Bush, and Trump, and in Chile, it was attempted by dictator Pinochet alongside the Chicago Boys,» they recalled.
«And what was the outcome? The only thing that trickled down was inequality, and there was less money available for social benefits. In our country, the worst recessions since the ’30s were triggered, and per capita GDP plummeted,» the video states.
At this point, the coalition emphasized that back then, «social policies had to be implemented in democracy to achieve real economic growth».
«Today, Kast wants to uniquely repeat this experiment in democracy: tax cuts for big companies, reintegrating the tax system in favor of the top 1%, eliminating contributions for the wealthiest, among other measures. All this, while claiming that there is no money in the State,» questioned members of the Frente Amplio.
Finally, the video suggests that «it’s likely that under Kast’s ideas, wealth will trickle down to the super-rich, but it is very unlikely that anything will reach the rest of Chile».
