The Frente Amplio (FA) solidified its confrontational stance against the government on Sunday, outlining political guidelines that will shape its actions in the upcoming months. FA president Constanza Martínez confirmed that the party will tackle the economic and tax reform spearheaded by José Antonio Kast’s administration with «great firmness and clarity».

Martínez described the initiative as «perhaps one of the most telling measures this government has introduced» and laid the groundwork for a robust opposition to the flagship project of the far-right administration, which includes controversial measures like a reduction of the first-category tax from 27% to 23%, the elimination of capital gains tax, the implementation of a tax credit for formal employment, as well as a 25-year tax invariability for investments exceeding $50 million.

We firmly reject this disastrous reform and the exclusionary way this government is trying to push forward at all costs,” she stated during a press conference following the closure of the FA’s Ideological Congress.

Martínez criticized the government’s ideological direction, arguing that the reform lays bare the administration’s true priorities. «There is a clear ideological project that shows us the only thing they do not improvise on is lowering taxes for the super rich and cutting the state’s ability to respond to the people,» she asserted, dismissing official narratives that emphasize security and economic growth.

The FA leader supported her claims with specific examples, highlighting that mayors from her party have already faced the consequences of budget cuts in critical areas such as health, security, and municipal services, as reported by Diario U de Chile.

Warnings of «Very High Risk» in the Processing of the Mega Reform

Senator Beatriz Sánchez provided a more alarming perspective on the legislative landscape, cautioning that the approval of the idea to legislate was achieved by an exceedingly narrow margin in the Senate, with 26 votes in favor, 23 against, and 1 abstention.

«The government managed to pass the idea of legislation by a minimal difference; it did not gain any support from the opposition,» the parliamentarian emphasized, underscoring the fragile backing the executive holds. Sánchez projected that this situation is only temporary, anticipating that Senate majorities could shift in the coming weeks or months, introducing «a different discussion» in the legislative process.

The parliamentarian also warned about the government’s rigidity in handling the proposal. «If they maintain their intent to avoid deeper discussions on the project, they will not achieve different results,» she concluded, labeling the future of the initiative as having a «very high risk.»

Sánchez’s assessment outlines a complex scenario for the government, which sees its maneuvering capacity threatened by a lack of political will for creating cross-party agreements.

Firm Defense of Nicolás Grau Against Constitutional Accusation

In another political battleground, the president of the Frente Amplio firmly addressed the constitutional accusation facing former minister Nicolás Grau, with the vote scheduled for this Tuesday. Martínez described the legal action initiated by the ruling party as a completely unfounded assault, arguing that the accusatory document threatens the country’s fiscal institutionality.

The leader backed her position with support from specialists, noting that around 100 economists have expressed concern about the future capacity of the Ministry of Finance to fulfill its constitutional and legal duties. «This is putting at risk […] the Ministry of Finance’s ability in the future to, firstly, do its job and, secondly, ensure compliance with the Constitution and laws,» Martínez argued, also warning that this assault «damages our democracy,» as reported by the cited media.

The FA president expressed confidence in the voting outcome, hoping that «the ability to perform the work of the Ministry of Finance will prevail,» and affirmed that the former secretary of state would have «our full support.»

The closure of the Ideological Congress revealed the FA’s strategy to position itself as a firm counterbalance to the government, articulating a discourse of programmatic critiques, legislative warnings, and a corporate defense of its political figures against what they deem an unjustified attack. Martínez concluded her remarks with a direct statement: «Our complete rejection from the Frente Amplio to this disastrous reform and this exclusionary way this government has sought to advance at all costs,» a phrase that encapsulates the collective’s stance as they face the legislative challenges ahead.
