On Monday, May 4, the government of José A. Kast submitted its bill to the Chamber of Deputies to set the minimum wage, proposing an increase for 2026 from the current $539,000 to $546,546, leading to a net amount of $444,287.
According to Fundación Sol, the initiative outlines that practically, «the proposed increase in the minimum wage translates to just $252 a day.»
«With this, the new net minimum wage totals $444,287, and the hourly wage in net terms barely covers the cost of a kilogram of regular bread,» added Fundación Sol.
In this regard, they indicated that the gross hourly wage would stand at $3,036 and the net amount at $2,468. «This is sufficient for a kilogram of marraquetas ($2,306) or a kilogram of hallullas ($2,346), but falls short for a kilogram of whole wheat hallulla ($2,922) or a kilogram of kneaded bread ($2,996),» explained Fundación Sol in an infographic shared on their social media.
Two Stages
The bill submitted by the government proposes a two-stage minimum wage increase. The first stage, starting in May 2026, sets a 1.4% increase ($7,546) based on the accumulated variation of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from January to March.
The second stage is set for January 2027, adjusted according to the accumulated inflation from April 1 to December 31, 2026, which, based on the Central Bank’s projections, would reach 2.6%.
According to the project, this same adjustment logic will apply to family allowances, maternity allowances, and family subsidies.
The initiative also proposes to raise the monthly income for workers under 18 years old and over 65 years old to $407,711 and increase the monthly income for non-remunerative purposes to $352,298.
