Gabriel Parra’s Poncho Revisited by Daughter Juanita in Commemoration of His Legacy

On the anniversary of drummer Gabriel Parra’s passing, the band Los Jaivas shared a heartfelt tribute concerning one of the most iconic items in their history: the poncho that accompanied the musician and is a significant part of the visual narrative of the acclaimed work «Alturas de Macchu Picchu».

Juanita Parra, Gabriel’s daughter, recounted its intimate history and meaning within the band’s creative universe—a narrative that serves as a gesture of transmission and continuity, projecting Gabriel Parra’s musical and spiritual legacy into new generations.

Through their social media platforms, the group commemorated him with a message that encapsulates the enduring impact of his legacy:

“Today, on this anniversary, we remember Gabriel.
Pure energy. Rhythm, strength, and an essence that continues to beat.
His presence lives on in all our work, and also in the symbols that accompany us. Like this poncho, an important part of Alturas de Macchu Picchu, which today, through the memory and voice of his daughter Juanita, reconnects us with his story.
An object that holds not just history but above all, spirit… just like the memory of Gabriel, which remains present, immortal, and accompanying us on this journey.
Gabriel sounds. Always.”

Thus, the poncho transcends being just a material item; it stands as a symbol of artistic identity and a connection to Latin American roots that have defined the band’s journey.

In Juanita Parra’s narrative, not only is its historical significance revealed, but its emotional dimension is also intimately tied to Gabriel’s figure and the creation of an aesthetic that has resonated across generations.

This tribute also takes place at a significant moment for Los Jaivas, as they embark on a new cycle with the Alturas de Macchu Picchu 2026–2027 tour, commemorating 45 years of a landmark piece in Latin American music.

The tour will kick off on May 15 in Rancagua, featuring an extensive journey across all regions of the country and reaffirming the relevance of a repertoire that continues to resonate with the present.
