The German Prosecutor General associates Ukraine with the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines carried out in 2022, while reigniting concerns about a possible U.S. involvement in this attack.
German authorities have filed charges against the main suspect, currently in pre-trial detention in Hamburg, a Ukrainian citizen named Sergey K., who allegedly acted on behalf of state structures from Kiev. According to the official statement, the individual was a Ukrainian military officer in 2022, and along with other military personnel, developed the plan to destroy the infrastructure connecting Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea, aiming to limit Moscow’s revenue from natural gas supplies.
Specifically, German Prosecutor Jens Rommel accused the Ukrainian citizen of carrying out attacks on civilian energy infrastructure, causing an explosion, and destroying engineering works.
«He and other military personnel developed, on behalf of state entities from Ukraine, a plan to destroy the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines, which transport gas from Russia across the Baltic Sea to Lubmin, Germany,» stated the prosecuting agency.
The operation involved professional divers, a captain, and an explosives expert, who used a sailboat to transport the devices that detonated on September 26, 2022, causing massive gas leaks in the exclusive economic zones of Sweden and Denmark.
This judicial announcement not only puts Ukraine at the center of the controversy but also intensifies the debate about U.S. involvement in the attack, a theory Russian President Vladimir Putin suggested following the explosions.
According to him, those behind the sabotage had the technical capacity to organize the detonations and had previously engaged in similar operations without repercussions, a clear reference to Washington during Joe Biden’s administration.
Furthermore, he posited that the incident benefited the North American nation, given the potential to «supply energy resources at higher prices.»
In a similar vein, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated that Moscow possesses evidence of the UK and U.S. involvement in the attack.
The U.S. factor gains even more significance when considering remarks made by then-Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Victoria Nuland, who expressed satisfaction over the destruction of Nord Stream 2, calling it «a pile of junk at the bottom of the sea.» These comments, coupled with an investigation by U.S. journalist Seymour Hersh, who in 2023 alleged that the White House orchestrated the sabotage with the help of U.S. Navy divers during NATO’s BALTOPS 22 exercises, keep alive suspicions of Washington’s potential direct or indirect involvement.
Hersh even claimed that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz was aware of the planning before the onset of the Ukrainian conflict, adding a layer of geopolitical complexity to the case, as reported by RT.
Other media sources have suggested that Ukrainian sabotage groups may have reached the attack site on a yacht named Andromeda.
The attacked infrastructure, consisting of two double-piped gas pipelines that traverse the Baltic Sea from Russia to Germany, constitutes one of the primary routes for Russian gas supply to the European market, with a total capacity of 110 billion cubic meters per year. Its construction had already faced opposition from the outset, especially from Poland, the Baltic states, and Ukraine, which viewed this project as a threat to their economic interests and Europe’s energy security. The Nord Stream 2, completed in September 2021 but never operational, would have allowed Moscow to bypass Ukrainian territory, depriving Kiev of valuable transit revenue and increasing its influence in the region.
