Giorgio Jackson Critiques Kast’s Plan: A 1% GDP Return for the Wealthiest Citizens

The former minister Giorgio Jackson warned that the proposal being put forward by the government of José Kast returns 1% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to the top 1% of the wealthiest people in the country.

During his participation in the Global Progressive Mobilisation—a significant international forum taking place in Barcelona, Spain—Jackson, who formerly headed the Ministry of Social Development and Family under ex-president Gabriel Boric, addressed leaders, social organizations, and political figures regarding the rise of the far-right and the crisis of multilateralism.

He commented on the “Economic and Social Reconstruction and Development Law” proposed by the far-right, which is slated to be sent to Congress next week, describing it as a “cover-up” aimed at laying the groundwork for a major tax reform.

This is a highly regressive tax reform that returns 1% of the GDP to less than 1% of the wealthiest citizens of Chile, and that’s its main goal,” he asserted.

The former Secretary General of the Presidency suggested that under this scenario, Kast’s administration would deploy a “trickle-down economics” approach, asserting that “if we lower taxes for our friends, for our supporters who financed our campaigns, there will be more jobs.”

“It will be like a promise of a better future,” he emphasized.

«They are not proving to be good at governing»

During his address at the forum, Giorgio Jackson argued that since Kast took office on March 11, his governance has been marked by challenges and a cabinet characterized by “very low political experience but numerous conflicts of interest.”

He pointed out that Kast’s administration appears to be following Steve Bannon’s playbook, the far-right strategist who led Donald Trump’s presidential campaign in the United States in 2016, based on the tactic to “flood the zone in the first months.”

In his view, both José Kast and his team have shown that they make a lot of mistakes.

They are very good at campaigning, but in this first month, they are not showing the Chilean people that they are good at governing,” he stated, referencing opinion polls revealing that their approval ratings are plummeting.

“They started with around 60% and are now at about half that, with approval rates of 30%, 35%, or perhaps 38%, in less than a month. So I think that many times the right is good at campaigning because they trigger a sense of fear, but not necessarily provide a good solution,” he explained.

In light of this situation, the former secretary of state emphasized that the challenge for progressive forces in Chile is to reorganize and unite efforts.

We are trying to bring together the opposition because, of course, managing a coalition is tough,” he concluded.
