The U.S. announcement of a naval blockade against Iran heightens market uncertainty and creates divisions in the West. Madrid, aligned with Brussels (EU), rejects the escalation and advocates for diplomacy. Beijing summarizes its strategy with a firm refusal to join the blockade. In Chile, recent data indicates a population struggling with rising fuel prices and economic pessimism.

Hormuz Blockade: Trump’s Isolation and Strong Stance from Spain and the EU

On Monday, President Donald Trump ordered a complete naval blockade of all Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz, aimed at crippling the Iranian economy and reopening a vital maritime route through which nearly 20% of the world’s oil flows. However, this initiative has met with a cold reception from traditional allies, highlighting Washington’s diplomatic isolation.

While British Prime Minister Keir Starmer rejected joining the blockade and Australia called for «de-escalation,» Spain has taken a leading role in defining the European stance. Defense Minister Margarita Robles described the blockade as «another senseless act» in a conflict that has led the world into a downward spiral.

Beyond this specific statement, the Spanish government has communicated a clear fundamental position to its EU partners: rejection of any unilateral actions exceeding the UN mandate, defense of international humanitarian law, and a priority on diplomatic mediation.

Sources from the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that «wars are not won through blockades, but through negotiations.» In coordination with France and Germany, Spain is promoting an initiative within the EU to revive negotiation talks between the U.S. and Iran. The European community insists that the Strait of Hormuz must remain open for all under the principle of freedom of navigation, while rejecting both the «Iranian blackmail» of imposing tolls and the «disproportionate response» of the U.S. blockade.

Markets on Edge and the Threat of Global Inflation

Trump’s announcement drove oil prices up: U.S. crude rose by 8% and Brent surpassed $102 per barrel. Investors fear that the closure of the Strait will prolong the energy crisis and fuel inflation across all continents.

Meanwhile, the lack of allies for the operation raises serious doubts about its viability. The U.S. Central Command (Centcom) clarified that the blockade will only affect Iranian ports, but the threat from the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, who vowed a «severe response» to any approaching military vessel, raises the risk of direct confrontation.

Chile: Economic Impact Evident in Recent Data

As major powers gauge their strength in the Middle East, the economic consequences are harshly felt in countries distant from the conflict. Chile, which is not involved in the war, faces its own internal crisis, with recent data being particularly revealing.

Historic Fuel Price Increases. President José Antonio Kast’s government has announced a 32% rise in gasoline prices and a 62% jump in diesel, a decision that caused long lines at gas stations before it took effect. This hike, the largest in years, directly impacts consumers’ finances and inflates transportation and production costs.

Record Public Concern. Rising prices have become the primary economic concern for Chileans, mentioned by 59% in the latest Cadem survey. Simultaneously, 35% of households report that their budgets do not stretch to the end of the month, revealing a declining purchasing power.

Job Stability: Main Aspiration and Fear. For the fourth consecutive year, job and economic stability tops both the hopes (36%) and fears (35%) of citizens. At the same time, 40% of households claim they cannot cover their monthly expenses, reflecting an increasingly fragile social base.

Widespread Pessimism. A Criteria survey conducted on April 8 and 9, 2026, shows that 43% of Chileans anticipate the country’s situation will worsen in the next six months. This data solidifies a climate of distrust and disenchantment that spans all social strata.

Summary of Key Economic Indicators for Chile:

> – Gasoline price increase: +32% | Diesel price increase: +62%
> – Main economic concern (Cadem): 59% (price increase)
> – Households unable to make ends meet: 35% (Cadem)
> – Households unable to cover monthly expenses: 40%
> – Job stability: main aspiration (36%) and main fear (35%)
> – Pessimists about the country’s future (Criteria, April 8-9, 2026): 43%

China’s Position

While Europe opts for diplomacy and Chile suffers the economic impact, China has crystallized its stance in a firm refusal to support the blockade. This reflects the strategic confrontation between China and the U.S.

Beijing relies on the Strait of Hormuz for over 40% of its oil and maintains a 25-year Strategic Partnership Agreement with Iran, making Tehran a key partner in its Belt and Road Initiative. Consequently, its response has been twofold:

-Diplomatic: In the UN Security Council, it labeled the blockade as «a violation of international law» and equated the U.S. measure with «state piracy.» Officially, it calls for moderation but avoids condemning Iran.

-Military: It has dispatched two destroyers to the Gulf of Oman with orders to escort Chinese-flagged tankers and resist attempts at redirection by the U.S. Navy.

Beijing’s message is clear: it will not join the blockade. If Washington attempts to intercept a vessel bound for China, the world could witness the first direct naval confrontation between the two superpowers since the Cold War.

A World on Three Fronts

The Trump administration seems to underestimate the domino effect of its actions. While the U.S. President insists that «other countries will help us,» the reality presents a fragmented world:

-Europe led by Spain and Germany opts for diplomacy and rejects the blockade as a legitimate tool.

-China deploys its warships, continues its oil purchases from Iran, and warns that it will not accept an illegal closure of the Strait.

-Chile reveals through surveys and the wallets of its citizens the silent cost of the global crisis: 43% believe the country will worsen, and rising prices are already the main concern for six out of ten Chileans.

The question lingering in Brussels, Beijing, and Santiago remains the same: How much longer can the global economy withstand before the Middle Eastern crisis triggers a worldwide recession?

For now, Trump’s blockade has not subdued Iran, but it is already reflected in the everyday fears of Chilean citizens, while China observes and moves its pieces on the geopolitical chessboard with the patience of one who knows that oil continues to flow, for the time being, towards the East.
