The Global Sumud Flotilla has confirmed that ten of its volunteers detained by Libyan authorities have been on a dry hunger strike for the past four days, protesting their illegal detention and denouncing the mistreatment they’ve experienced, along with the denial of access to legal counsel.

«Since Monday, ten detainees in Benghazi have been refusing food, with many also abstaining from water, in protest against their prolonged illegal detention, abuse, and denial of legal advice. Some have been forced to break the strike, but many continue despite their health deteriorating,» the Flotilla reported.

According to El Ciudadano, via a report from Nodal, the Global Sumud warned that the lives of the volunteers «are in danger. They have not received medical attention and are being held in ‘black sites’ (unknown areas). We demand their immediate release.»

The situation was also reported by elDiario.es, which noted in a report that as a consequence of the dry hunger strike, on Wednesday, June 3, there were «several cases of fainting, particularly affecting women.»

«Libyan authorities have denied activists any form of external medical assistance, preventing official medical teams from entering to visit them. This situation has forced the doctors who were part of the delegation to monitor and examine their colleagues, despite being severely exhausted themselves,» the publication stated.

The Flotilla demands the immediate entry of independent medical observers, access to international consuls, and the unconditional and immediate release of the 11 volunteers.

Regarding the dry hunger strike, they reminded that Libyan authorities are «fully responsible, both legally and morally, for the life and physical integrity» of the activists.

«A dry hunger strike can be deadly very quickly; without immediate intervention, this humanitarian crisis will turn into a tragedy,» warned the Global Sumud.
