The Governor of the Metropolitan Region, Claudio Orrego, has renewed his criticism of the cancellation of the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center (GAM) project, mandated by José A. Kast’s administration, emphasizing the substantial financial repercussions this decision will entail for the state.
«The cancellation of the GAM project will not only result in $6.2 billion in fines for the government but also mean losing 10 years of work from three different administrations, along with an additional $2 billion in cleanup and design costs,» the regional authority stated.
Orrego added, «And all of this, just to leave an abandoned white elephant in the middle of Alameda, attracting incivilities and all kinds of risks,» reflecting on a news report shared by Radio Biobío regarding this situation.
«Santiago and its culture deserve more,» the Governor proclaimed.
According to the aforementioned report, Undersecretary of Public Works, Nicolás Balmaceda, presented to the Senate Finance Committee the calculations made by the Ministry of Public Works (MOP) to comply with the regulations for public works contracts, clarifying that the government will need to pay $6.274 billion to Consortium GAM Moller DVC (the project management team) for outstanding payment claims, project suspension, and early termination.
