Public health workers have rejected the «Listen to Your Heart» bill, which was introduced on June 25 by right-wing lawmakers to the Health Commission of the Chamber of Deputies. The proposal aims to amend the Health Code to require doctors to inform women about embryonic or fetal heart activity and offer them the opportunity to hear it before an abortion, according to Radio Nuevo Mundo.
The president of the Democratic Confederation of University Health Professionals (CONFEDEPRUS), Camila Fuentevilla Maturana, described the bill as part of «a conservative agenda from the far-right aimed at rolling back the sexual and reproductive rights of women and gender dissenters in Chile». She told Radio Nuevo Mundo that «such initiatives seek to hinder or prevent access to voluntary abortion» and that the project is «profoundly revictimizing».
Fuentevilla emphasized that the initiative undermines the rights of «those who need to access this service: women, girls, and gender dissenters who deserve respectful and quality care based on scientific evidence and public health perspectives, not on moralistic issues». The union leader condemned the creation of scenarios designed to coerce women into continuing a pregnancy, exposing them to physical and mental risks, as reported by Radio Nuevo Mundo.
«Therefore, as public health workers, we reject this bill and will continue to defend the right to health, autonomy, and reproductive freedom,» Fuentevilla concluded. Radio Nuevo Mundo highlighted that health unions remain vigilant against what they consider an assault on established rights amid a legislative offensive from conservative sectors to restrict access to voluntary abortion in Chile.
