Original article: Documental inmersivo revela presencia de espíritus que habitan en complejo volcánico Villarrica – Quetrupillán – Lanín
«Inmersión en la Mapu»—translated in Mapudungun as ‘Koneltu ti mapu mu’—is the immersive audiovisual saga created by Chilean artist Rosa Angelini. Its first chapter debuted in 2022, and this year it returns with a new episode transporting audiences to the Villarrica – Quetrupillán – Lanín volcanic complex: «The Spirit of the Volcano,» the fourth addition to the series.
This location is regarded as sacred in Mapuche cosmology, where «the fiery heart of the volcano shapes the land and memory,» according to the artist. Through a unique audiovisual experience, the work channels the ancestral energy of the volcanoes, which are geological and spiritual pillars for the Mapuche people.
The film also offers a sensory journey, inviting viewers to feel the essence of the Ngen Winkul, the protective spirit of the volcano, and the voices that resonate from below the earth.
«These are the spirits that dwell in the Earth’s core, seen as guardians of the balance between life, death, and rebirth. It is an invocation to fire as the origin, transformation, and as a living presence in the territory,» adds Rosa Angelini.
The series «Inmersión en la Mapu» presents itself as a contemporary creation in the realm of new audiovisual media, designed as a sensory and spiritual experience that intertwines art, technology, nature, science, and ancestral identity.
Inspired by the Mapuche worldview and the profound memory of the earth, it prompts an urgent reflection on the connection between humanity and nature amid the climate crisis.
In this context, its presentations feature large-scale video installations, 360 Dolby Atmos sound, and live musical performances. In summary, it represents an interdisciplinary proposal merging film, sound, and 360º music, along with 3D animation, visual effects, and performing arts.
«Spirit of the Volcano» features original music composed by Rosa Angelini alongside Fran Straube (Rubio). It stars Mapuche musician and ulkantufe Sofia Painiqueo, who portrays an ancestral spirit traversing the volcanoes, invoking the spirits of the mountain and volcano, praying for the protection of nature’s forces.
The experience, produced by IMITELAB, will have its national premiere on May 1st at the Reino Fungi Festival in Pucón, La Araucanía region, where a live show will also be featured.
Additionally, during the screenings, episodes I, II, and III of «Inmersión en la Mapu» will be showcased alongside the debut of the fourth installment, «The Spirit of the Volcano.»
Furthermore, the new episode will have its international premiere at the Santiago Wild Film Festival, organized by Ladera Sur in collaboration with National Geographic. The work has been nominated for Best Film in the ‘New Narratives’ category, with screenings scheduled from May 4 to 8 in Santiago.
