Original article: Nace un manifiesto internacional por Cuba: Más de 8400 firmas de 58 países exigen fin del cerco energético de EEUU y condenan escalada belicista de Trump
Amid Cuba’s participation in the United Nations General Assembly on July 7, 2026, the manifesto «No to Military Aggression Against Cuba: International Manifesto Against the Rise of Fascism in Latin America» has been made public. This document gathers 8,840 signatures from 58 countries, supported by prominent figures from culture, academia, and politics across Latin America and Europe.
The manifesto condemns the escalating militaristic stance of the United States government, led by Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which in recent months has created a scenario that raises the possibility of military aggression against the island.
The signatories warn that the economic and energy blockade imposed on Cuba constitutes, due to its humanitarian cost, an act akin to genocide, as it uses hunger and fuel shortages as weapons of war against the civilian population.
«The energy blockade imposed by the US has dramatically exacerbated the already critical situation in Cuba, stemming from the economic blockade enforced by the same country for over 67 years,» noted the signatories.
They recalled that «according to a UN report, the blockade causes a severe socioeconomic crisis that directly impacts the human rights of the population.»
«The lack of fuel has led to prolonged and daily power outages, interrupting essential services like hospitals, schools, water supply, and public sanitation. As a result, the population faces serious challenges accessing food, medicine, and transportation,» the document outlines.
The international community has been clear: the UN General Assembly has adopted, for the 33rd consecutive time, a resolution demanding an end to the blockade, a policy the Cuban government itself characterizes as an act of genocide and that the UN considers a form of collective punishment against the 11 million Cubans.
The document aligns with complaints filed by the Cuban government with the United Nations, which has described the blockade as systematic violations of human rights.
Notable figures supporting the manifesto include musician Silvio Rodríguez, writers Elena Poniatowska and Laura Esquivel, actors Daniel Jiménez Cacho and Fernando Bonilla, journalist Ignacio Ramonet, Argentine political scientist Atilio Borón, director of La Jornada Carmen Lira Sade, Casa de las Américas director Abel Prieto, British academic Helen Yaffe, Madrid Complutense University professor Juan Carlos Monedero, and Fidel Castro’s biographer Katiuska Blanco, among others.
The manifesto comes at a time of heightened tension. In recent months, the US government has intensified the energy blockade, obstructing fuel supplies to the island, while sectors of the Trump administration have been pressing for direct military action, as solidarity movements in various countries have reported.
The call is part of the growing wave of anti-fascist mobilizations taking place in Latin America, Europe, and the United States in response to the rise of the far right and imperialist policies.
